Jack Murphy has worked on a wide variety of projects as both lyricist and composer. Collaborating with Frank Wildhorn, he wrote lyrics for Linda Eder's EMI CD as well as songs on her Atlantic CD's.  Jack wrote the words & music for Linda’s TV Special, Trail Mix, on The Animal Planet.

In collaboration with Mary Bracken Phillips, he composed the score for the musical Silver Dollar, which debuted at the Goodspeed Opera House, with a second production at the Stage One Theater in Wichita directed by Scott Schwartz. He has written and performed albums for many record labels including A&M, Verve, MGM, Elektra, Columbia and ABC Dunhill, and was a staff writer for United Artists Music.

In collaboration with Frank Wildhorn and Gregory Boyd of the Alley Theater in Houston, Texas, he wrote the lyrics for The Civil War, which garnered him a Tony Nomination for Best Score when it debuted on Broadway at the St. James Theater. He was back on Broadway again at the St. James Theater with two songs penned for the hit show, Swing.

Once again in collaboration with composer Frank Wildhorn, Jack has written the Book and Lyrics of a musical about a 1920's American author and his wife, suggested by the lives of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, titled Zelda, directed by Vincent Marini at the Lenape Regional Performing Arts Center in Marlton, New Jersey.

Frank and Jack recently had several European World Premiers: the musical, Rudolf, in Budapest, Hungary in May of 2006, another production of the same show at the Imperial Theater in Tokyo on May 6, 2008, and the show’s third Opening Night in Vienna on February 26, 2009. In October, 2008 a modern take on Carmen, with Book by Norman Allen, opened in Prague and on March 14, 2009 The Count of Monte Cristo had its World Premier at the Theatre St. Gallen in Switzerland.

Jack also wrote and directed a play for the Progress Energy Theater in Raleigh, North Carolina titled Gods of Autumn, which had its World Premier on August 20, 2008.

Also in the works for 2009 is Havana with a book by Pulitzer Prize winning Playwright, Nilo Cruz (Anna In The Tropics) with Music and Lyrics by Frank Wildhorn and Jack Murphy and directed by Sergio Trujillo.

There is also a re-imagining of the children’s classic Alice stories  — Wonderland — with Frank’s music and Book by Jack Murphy and Gregory Boyd and Lyrics by Jack, directed by Gregory Boyd that had a successful  World Premier at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in December of 2009.  The  re-tooled version of the production then moved to the Alley Theater in Houston where it had a very successful run in January and February of 2010.
